10 Essential Oils for Pain Relief

If you suffer from pain every day it’s always good to try a few other things rather than relying on prescription or over the counter medication. Maybe you have an ache or pain that needs soothing, a niggling headache, blocked nose or just general fatigue.

Essential oils are effective in the relief of pain because they bypass the digestive system and are absorbed straight into the blood stream.They can penetrate cells quickly, providing oxygen and increasing circulation to inflamed joints.

Here is a list of 10 Essential Oils which can Help Pain Relief.

Lavender for migraines and tension headaches. It is soothing and has a mild sedative effect. It can be applied directly to the forehead or inhaled through a diffuser.It is anti inflammatory and analgesic so helps relieve aching muscles. Mix a few drops with coconut oil and rub into the area. It also helps sleep.

Ginger either fresh or in extract form is well-known for its digestive aid but it can be used to help pain from rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis

German chamomile oil can be used to treat lower back pain, bowel disease or PMS. The deep blue colour is down to the compound chamazulene which has anti-inflammatory properties.

Peppermint oil is a decongestant but can also relieve neuralgia pain like fibromyalgia.

Cayenne essential oil can be used to help severe nerve pain like shingles.

Sandalwood is an expensive oil but a little goes a long way. It is a powerful pain reliever and has been known to help endometriosis.

Clove oil can be used mixed with a cup of warm water to relieve toothache or used to gargle to soothe a sore throat.An undiluted drop can be used to treat insect bites.

Helichrysum oil can be used to treat deep nerve pain such as sciatica. It is also good for bruises and sunburn when applied mixed with a little coconut oil.

Marjoram is analgesic and anti spasmodic. For colds, flu and headaches and muscle spasms.

Basil oil is energising and uplifting, it has muscle relaxant and decongestant benefits.

 

 

Reduce Pain with a Cold Compress

Good for headaches, sprains and strains. The cooling peppermint works as an analgesic to reduce inflammation and discomfort.

Mix 2 drops of peppermint oil and 500ml of cold water.

Soak a towel in the water, ring out, add ice cubes and apply to affected area.

  1. This was a wonderful post with great information. I have been dealing with Multiple Sclerosis for 16 years and it isn’t any fun.   2. Oh my, I love you so much right now.
    I suffer from fibromyalgia which = major muscle pain, migraines, occasional muscle spasms, easy bruises, and sinusitis among others.
    I have read about some natural ways of helping, I use turmeric extract and Arnica, various natural cold remedies as I get sick often, etc. But this list of essential oils lays it out there, and that’s hard to find. I really appreciate this post and am going to take advantage of much of the information.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words and I hope you find something that helps with the pain. I have very similiar symptoms to you. I was convinced I had fibromyalgia until a scan revealed severe disc degeneration at the bottom of my spine. I think you find your own dealing mechanisms and what works for someone might not work for another but keep trying and take care .
